AVONGRO has been successful in the first round of the new federal government Caring for our Country grants. The Project, entitled 'Developing sustainable production systems, resilient to climate change - Baselining' is a collaborative project bringing together the science and modeling tools of CSIRO and the practical experience of grower groups and state government departments. The Project will fund a team of part-time Farm Forestry Officers for the Avon to work one-on-one with Avon land managers to ascertain the current level of the integration of tree crops in low-rainfall agricultural systems. Land manager input will be included and their advice used in developing holistic production systems more resilient to climate change. CSIRO will investigate growth and carbon sequestration rates for various Avon conditions and build these into a user-friendly web-based modeling tool so that individual land managers can make sound economic and environmental decisions on the integration of tree crops - and how the tree crops will affect the on- and off- farm environment. This site will be updated regularly as the project develops. For more information, contact AVONGRO: mdurcan@iinet.net.au
